And The Winners for 2011 Are:
The work of selecting the Lawn and Landscape winners is over. Now comes the easy part, announcing the winners. But before we do, let's reflect on the process and the why's of this contest.
I moved my family to Walnut Hills from the Chicago area in 1971. At that time Walnut Hills was a very small community remotely located in the South Denver suburbs. Arapahoe Road was a two lane country road. It actually became a dirt road east of what is now Boston Street going to the Arapahoe County Airport (now Centennial Airport). There was a drive in movie where Target is. The only businesses in our area were a 7-Eleven and some gas stations. Well you get the picture; we were out in the boonies.
One of the main entrances into Walnut Hills was at Willow Street (now blocked off) where you were greeted by a sign that said, "Welcome To Beautiful Walnut Hills". That sign is still there but is now covered up by the new Walnut Hills sign. It is this slogan that is the motivation for the Lawn and Landscaping contest. And we hope the contest encourages you to keep Walnut Hills beautiful by maintain your property.
The process was simple - look at all the properties in Walnut Hills and select 3 winners. Wow, it turned out not to be that simple this year. The committee was impressed by the number of houses that we felt qualify as potential winners. We actually did look at each and every lawn in Walnut Hills. We saw some disasters, some average, some good, and some great lawns. For those of you who are in the disaster and average category, we hope this contest encourages you get rid of the weeds, fertilize, water, mow and edge, the basic activities for a well maintained lawn. And take advantage of our dumpster days to get rid of visible unwanted lawn, landscape, construction and other items (note - there are some restrictions).
Of the 1178 homes in Walnut Hills, we identified 32 that had exceptional curb appeal. We wish we could award all 32, but we only have 3 prizes.
Coming up with the final three was difficult. We considered the initial curb appeal, quality of the hardscape, lawn, flowers, trees and shrubs, and how it all came together to form a visual masterpiece. We also looked at both sides of the driveway and any visual side areas. Unfortunately many were eliminated just because a small part of their lawn was not as well kept as the rest.
So, we congratulate all 32 homes but especially the top three.
